You probably know by now that diets don’t work….at least not permanently. The potential for failure is great and when you deprive your body in the way that many diets are designed, the possibility of gaining back even more weight is very high. There are many reasons that this country as a whole is battling obesity on an epidemic level. One of the most common reasons, is also one of the least understood.
Now many of you may feel that time and time again, you have repeatedly tried to eat in a healthy way. But despite your best intentions and greatest feats of will power, you give in to fast food, or eat too many sweets and too many white flour products like breads, crackers, chips, or pasta. Since these foods are not the optimal fuel our body requires, they can leave you feeling tired, irritable and downright old.
Maybe you are beginning to see the extra pounds form around your waistline or you notice your body feeling more achy and slowing down. You rationalize to yourself by saying you are getting older and that part of the aging process is to feel this way. Overeating carbohydrates and sweets, which is common in the standard American Diet, is what we refer to as a high glycemic diet and can lead to an addiction to these foods. A virtual roller coaster takes place in your body when you repeatedly spike the level of sugar in your blood with these foods. Many of us are unaware that we have been doing this all of our lives.
When you spike your blood sugar, the hormone insulin, attempts to regulate the excess amount of sugar in your blood but in the process brings the blood sugar crashing way too low. At this point you may feel irritable, shaky, even foggy as your brain demands that you feed it something that will once again raise your blood sugar, and you may begin to crave unhealthy carbohydrates such as chips, sodas, cookies, candy bread etc. However, these carbohydrates too readily turn into sugar and drastically raise the levels of glucose in our blood, so instead of raising the blood sugar back to normal, they send it skyrocketing again into unhealthy levels, beginning the up and down roller coaster ride all over again.
